AFCON 2021: Many feared dead, others injured during Cameroon's 2-1 win over Comoros

At least, six people have died in a stampede outside the Olembe Stadium in the central city of Yaounde, Cameroon, during the Africa Cup of Nations host nation's round of sixteen game against Comoros on Monday.

This happened as people struggled to gain access to the stadium ahead of the last-16 match against Comoros Islands.

Governor of the central region, Naseri Paul Biya, told reporters there could be more casualties while officials at a nearby hospital said over 40 injured people have been brought to the hospital.

The stadium, which has a capacity of 60,000, was not meant to accommodate 80 per cent because of Covid restrictions.

However, match officials were quoted as saying that 50,000 people were trying to attend.

"Some of the injured are in desperate condition," said Olinga Prudence, a local nurse at the Messassi hospital. "We will have to evacuate them to a specialized hospital."

Cameroon went ahead to beat Comoros 2-1 in the round of 16 clash despite the incident.
