AFCON 2021: Eguavoen reveals why Tunisia defeated Super Eagles 1-0

AFCON 2021: Eguavoen reveals why Tunisia defeated Super Eagles 1-0

Former Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has revealed why Nigeria lost to Tunisia at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.

Eguavoen blamed bad officiating for Super Eagles loss to Tunisia on Sunday.

He pointed out that the red card against Alex Iwobi was not fair because the foul was not intentional.

Tunisia scaled through to the quarter-finals of the tournament after defeating the Super Eagles by a lone goal.

The goal came as a result of an error from the goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye.

Carthage Eagles of Tunisia will now take on the Stallions of Burkina Faso in the quarter-final stage.

Speaking on Eagles' elimination from the tournament, Eguavoen said the team tried but the red card affected them.

He said: "We tried to come back after the goal, and we chased the game. But then, we got a red card.

"It was clear that the officiating wasn't fair.

"I won't criticise the referee because they are masters of the game, but Alex Iwobi's red card wasn't fair. The foul wasn't an intentional one."

Prior to the encounter, the Super Eagles were the favourites to win the encounter.

The Super Eagles had qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament after topping their group with nine points.
The Eguavoen-led side had defeated Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau to top the group.
